About Us

The Shape Up weight project was commissioned by Public Health Herts to run over an 18 month period between November 2014 and April 2017. Due to successful results the project has been extended to August 2020. The program focuses on combatting the growing problem of obesity amongst middle aged men in our county.

Obesity is national problem, and one that is growing fast. Currently 26% of Men in the UK obese and this is predicted to rise to 47% by 2030 and 60% by 2050!

In Hertfordshire the numbers are equally troubling with 67% of adult males currently overweight or obese. Aside from the huge (and growing) cost to the NHS, the personal consequences associated with this are significant.Several medical issues are associated with Obesity including:

Possible obesity related diseases:

  • Osteoarthritis

  • Diabetes

  • Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

  • Gall bladder disease

  • Hypertension (High blood pressure)

  • Heart disease

  • Cancer

Not to mention social implication to obese individuals:

  • Low self esteem

  • Bullying

  • Possible reduction in productivity and job prospects

  • Family implications

This is why the Shape Up programme is being delivered to areas across Hertfordshire. We have designed a programme that educates men to develop a healthy relationship with food and change unhealthy behaviours and habits that cause weight gain. The programme engages men in a fun and effective way and uses group exercise and sport to improve fitness and support weight loss.
